Prerequisites: Must enter Bradon Lirrian's House in Bruma.
Quest Giver: Carius Runnelius, Bradon Lirrian's House, Bruma
Reward: Phylactery of Litheness
[edit] Background
A "vampire hunter" moves to Bruma and kills a townsman accused of being a vampire. His wife, Erline Lirrian is distraught, claiming he was innocent - you must get to the bottom of the situation.
[edit] Walkthrough
This quest involves quite a bit of persuasion, so if your speechcraft skill is low, you may want to consider purchasing a charm spell from the Bruma Mages Guild before you get started (see the discussion for details).
Head to Lirrian's house. Inside is his wife and the lead investigator. First you must talk to the investigator, Carius Runnelius, he is reluctant to let you help in the investigation. You'll need to get his disposition to 70 or higher in order to get the information you need. Next you must talk to the widow, she will tell you that her dead husband was not a vampire, he just worked during the night, and slept during the day. She asks you to talk to the townspeople and find out what really happened.
Speak to Olav the innkeeper at Olav's Tap and Tack (you must raise his disposition to 70 or better as well) and he will tell you of his distrust for Raynil, so he gives you his room key. When investigating Raynil's room, look behind his drawers and there will be Gelebourne's Journal. Take the journal and you'll receive an update for the quest. Go back downstairs and speak to Olav again, then return the journal to the Carius Runnelius in Bradon Lirrian's house. He will tell you to meet him at the inn in 1 hour.
When you arrive at the inn at the appropriate time, you will be sent out to Boreal Stone Cave to the northwest of Bruma to find Raynil and either bring him back or kill him. When you get out to the caves, Raynil will speak with you, telling of his necessity to kill you. Kill him and look inside the waterlogged chest. Retrieve the amulet from within and return it to Erline. She will "identify" the amulet and give it to you, thus ending the quest. If this quest is active and you wait a day, Raynil won't be in Boreal Stone Cave thus you don't get much of reward.
Note: When Carius sends you to Boreal Stone Cave, make the journey immediately. If you wait too long, you will arrive at the cave too late and Raynil will have already escaped with the amulet. The story line will send you back to Carius to report the empty cave and he will then tell you that Raynil may never be found. This ends the quest, leaving you empty handed.
Note: There May be a glitch where Carius Runnelius will not apear in the inn and therefore you cannot complete the quest.
Note: it is possible this quest cannot be pursued while you are with Martin, and pursuing the main quest.
NOTE: If you are not able to raise Olav's disposition high enough to get the key, see the discussion for info.
