Adoring Fan

From the OblivioWiki – your guide to everything Oblivion

The Adoring Fan

The Adoring Fan is part of your reward for becoming Grand Champion in the Arena. He is a young Wood Elf that will follow you around (or stay put if you want) almost everywhere you go; he can't go into the locked area of the Mages Guild, and doesn't go into caves/dungeons. If you tell him to beat it, he will return to the Arena district, where you can ask him to follow you again (if you want). He will run away from combat, even if it's a single rat. The only way to make him fight enemies is to use a Rally spell on him or using the Staff of Worms on him if he died.

A lot of players find him annoying because of his constant use of the phrase "By Azura! By Azura! By Azura! It's the Grand Champion, I can't believe it's you! Standing here, next to me."

Some players use him as a torch bearer, while others practice their stealth skill by picking his pocket. However, many players find him irritating and simply choose to kill him. By killing him, it triggers the Dark Brotherhood questline. Like all escorts gained from completing a guild, he tends to reappear a few days after nonetheless, whether he was killed by the player or by monsters. If he dies within an Oblivion Gate and the player closes it, his corpse will return outside the now closed gate. He can be lost if you leave him in a cave or house. If you forget where you left him you might not find him again. You can get rid of him permanently by going into an Oblivion Gate, telling him to stay put while inside the gate, and closing the gate.

A fun way to get him to pipe down is to take him to Dive Rock, position him on the very tip of the ledge, then score a 1-hit kill in the direction of the cliff, then you can just sit back and watch him disappear down the cliffside. If you go down to the base of the cliff you'll find him standing there with a torch, all alone in the woods. Another way is to position him on the edge and start talking with him. Then tell him to go away, he will say that he will wait for you at the Imperial City and start running towards it. He will run directly off the cliff. Another fun way of keeping him out of sight is to lock him in the Lich's lair in the house in Anvil.

If you want to get rid of him, you can go to the cell across from your old one in the Imperial City Prison and tell him to wait. Then lock the door.

PC-owners who know how to use the Construction Set can actually make him useful permanently by modifying his stats.

[edit] Trivia

  • In Bethesda's other game Fallout 3, he is likely referenced by Sticky, the Annoying Man.
