[edit] Background Information
As part of Join the Mages Guild, you must get a recommendation from each city's Mages Guild Hall.
Near Anvil, merchants are being killed on the roads. Carahil suspects a mage, and she wants you to deal with it.
[edit] Walkthrough
Begin your investigation at the Brina Cross Inn north of Anvil. There you will meet up with Arielle Jurard who will instruct you to rent a room upstairs and pose as a traveling merchant. Talk with the innkeeper about a bed and he will ask you your buisiness. Don't worry, he isn't the killer and neither answer affects the quest. When you are finished talking with Marane, Caminalda may ask you some questions and voice her fear of the killer. When you arrive at your room, Jurard will give you more info and some instructions. Sleep (it doesn't matter how long) then follow the road east to Kvatch and she and her battlemages will follow. Caminalda will emerge from the shadows along the road (day or night) and attack you. You will have to fend her off briefly, until the battlemages arrive to help you kill her. Loot her corpse, return to Carahil, and you will have your recommendation from Anvil.
[edit] Bugs
Sometimes, Caminalda may not emerge and confront you. In this case, if you find where she's hiding in the trees and talk to her, she will initiate the attack, and you'll be able to complete the quest.
Sometimes, if you rented a room previously at the Brina Cross Inn, the innkeeper there will not rent you a room again. In this case, you should download and install this mod which will fix the bug.
Sometimes, an imperial watch soldier will come after you have killed the mage and start fighting Arielle Jurard. if this happens, Arielle may end up getting killed, as she does not fight back. if she is killed, then this has no affect on the outcome of this quest.

After you talk to Carahil:
- I need to speak with Arielle Jurard at the Brina Cross Inn, north of Anvil.
After talking with the innkeeper about a bed:
- I have rented a bed at the Brina Cross Inn. I need to wait in my room for Arielle Jurard, and then spend the night sleeping in the Inn.
After talking with Jurard:
- Arielle Jurard has instructed me to sleep at the Brina Cross Inn, then travel along the Gold Road towards Kvatch.
After sleeping in your rented bed:
- I've spent the night at the Brina Cross Inn. I need to follow the Gold Road towards Kvatch, and be wary of anyone along the road.
After Caminalda is dead:
- I need to talk to Carahil in Anvil and inform her that Caminalda has been defeated.
When finishing the quest:
- I have completed my task for Carahil.
