Faction: Mages Guild
Quest Giver: Kud-Ei of the Bravil Mages Guild
Reward: Bravil recommendation and a new spell.
[edit] Background Information
As part of Join the Mages Guild, you must get a recommendation from each city's Mages Guild Hall. Kud-Ei will tell you that Varon Vamori stole a mage's staff and you are to retrieve it.
[edit] Walkthrough
This quest involves persuasion. You are given the scrolls of Beguile to help you if your speechcraft is too low.
Part I
Find the thief Varon Vamori and persuade him to return the mage's staff he stole. When you do persuade him (~70 disposition), you find out he sold the staff to Soris Arenim in Imperial City. Upon discovering this, you must report it to Kud-Ei, who tells you to go fetch it.
Part II
Find Soris Arenim in Imperial City – he lives with his wife in the Talos Plaza District. You can persuade him to around 70 and then he will sell the staff to you for 200gp, and won't consider anything less.
As he won't just hand it over, if you don't want to have to fork out the cash, there's another option available to you. Have a chat with his wife. Get her disposition up and she'll tell you that he has the staff stowed away in a locked chest in the basement. The key can be found in a desk upstairs. Wait until they've gone to bed, then pay another surreptitious visit and liberate the staff.
Take it back to Kud-Ei who'll happily provide your recommendation and will also teach you the Captivate spell.
Note: Coincidentally, the staff you recover is set to Charm.

After receiving the quest:
- I've been given a charm scroll, and need to use it to help persuade Varon Vamori in Bravil to return Ardaline's staff.
After talking with Varon Vamori:
- Varon Vamori admitted to taking Ardaline's staff, but has sold it to a friend in the Imperial City. I need to deliver this news to Kud-Ei.
After talking with Kud-Ei:
- Kud-Ei has given me several more scrolls, and asked me to get the staff back. I need to find Soris Arenim in the Imperial City.
(this next part is if you choose to steal the staff as opposed to buying it)
After speaking with Soris Arenim's wife about the staff:
- I've spoken with Erissare Aremin. She told me that Soris has the staff in the basement of their house.
After stealing the staff:
- I've stolen the staff from Soris Arenim's house. I need to deliver it to Kud-Ei in Bravil.
When finishing the quest:
- I have delivered Ardaline's staff to Kud-Ei, and have earned a recommendation for it.

If you have joined the Thieves Guild before you begin the quest, Varon Valmori will already have near-full or full disposition to you.
[edit] Bug
It is possible to accidentally receive the quest Through a Nightmare, Darkly, due to a dialogue prompt informing you that Kud-Ei has a problem. This may potentially prevent her from displaying her Recommendation dialogue, preventing the player from joining the guild.
