[edit] Overview

  • Quest giver: You will obtain this quest upon determining the location of the Mythic Dawn's secret shrine.

[edit] Background

The four volumes of the Commentaries have led you to discover the Mythic Dawn's shrine to be found in the deep caverns of Lake Arrius.

[edit] Walkthrough

You determine that the location of the Dagon Shrine is in Lake Arrius Caverns. You have two options to go about completing this quest. You can either: (a) infiltrate the Mythic Dawn by pretending to join them, or (b) slaughter them all. (The Tougher of the two, considering many players will get this quest early on.]

[edit] Infiltrating the shrine

Infiltrating the shrine is an appealing option for a lower level character who may have difficulties dealing with the cultists. Upon entering the cave you are greeted by a Doorman who tells you to speak to Harrow. Harrow will require you to give him all your items and gold, however, there is a trick around this. Before entering the cave you can store all your items in any storage chest (The nearest storage chest at this time in the game would be the Armory Chest in the Basement of the Cloud Ruler Temple). This lets you avoid the hassle of having to reclaim them later. You can also dump all your Items outside the cave on a flat area of land (Just make sure you avoid dropping them on a hillside which will result in a nice demo of the game's physics). If you give your items to Harrow, he will carry them with him and you can reclaim them by pickpocketing or killing and looting him.

Harrow will lead you into a dark sacrificial chamber where after a short speech from Mankar Camoran you will be invited to join the Mythic Dawn.

You will be prompted to kill the prisoner, Jeelius. If you do so, you will become an acolyte of the Mythic Dawn. Some of the cultists that were attending the ceremony will leave, making it reasonably easier to escape. If you release Jeelius, the cultists will attack (both you and him). If Jeelius makes it out of the cave alive, he will reward you later increasing your Alchemy, Restoration and Mysticism skills by 1 (visit him in the Temple of the One in the Imperial City). Be warned though, it can be difficult to keep up with him and protect him, because he runs very fast.

[edit] Purging the caverns of the Mythic Dawn

Choosing option (b) is more straight forward. You don't have to go through the hassle of getting your stuff back and don't have to make the questionable decision of whether to kill the prisoner. Simply kill everyone that attacks you. Note that once you attack any Mythic Dawn member, everything you pick up in the cave will be considered "stolen" (Unless you watch Mankar Camoran's speech and then steal the Mysterium Xarxes, in which case the cultist will attack you and any loot you take from them will not be considered stolen).[NOTE: It is highly advisable to take a more sneaky route. With a sneak skill of 35-100, you should be able to kill each of them, one by one (Occasionaly a truel will happen.)]

[edit] Taking the Mysterium Xarxes

Regardless of which method you choose, Mankar Camoran will escape to his Paradise. You can still redeem yourself by stealing the Mysterium Xarxes which Camoran left on the altar. When you pick up the book a sealed gate to the north unlocks, opening your escape route. Note that if you want to save Jeelius, you have to free him before you pick up the book, because otherwise he'll be killed by the collapsing statue of Mehrunes Dagon(most of the time). Once you've taken the book, escape from the caverns, and return to Martin in Cloud Ruler Temple.

[edit] Journal Entries

After following the clues of the four volumes of books:

I have followed the clues hidden in the four volumes written by Mankar Camoran to a gravestone in Green Emperor Way. At noon, a map of Cyrodiil appeared on the gravestone, with the location of the Mythic Dawn's shrine marked on it. I need to find my way into the shrine and locate the Amulet of Kings.

Arriving at Lake Arrius Caverns, the location of the Mythic Dawn shrine:

I have arrived at Lake Arrius Caverns. The secret Mythic Dawn shrine must be somewhere inside.

Getting past the first Mythic Dawn guard:

I have passed the first hurdle. The Mythic Dawn guard has let me into the secret shrine. Now to locate the Amulet of Kings.

If you choose to give you armor and weapons to Harrow, the Warden of the Shrine, to become an initiate into the Mythic Dawn cult:

Harrow, the Warden of the Shrine, accepted me as an initiate into the Mythic Dawn cult. I was required to give him all my possessions and dress in an initiate's robe. He said that the Master, Mankar Camoran himself, is here at the shrine, and might perform my initiation himself. I should follow Harrow and see if he leads me to Mankar Camoran and the Amulet of Kings.

After upsetting the Mythic Dawn cult and attacking everyone:

Mankar Camoran escaped to his realm of Paradise with the Amulet of Kings, and closed his magical portal behind him. But the Mysterium Xarxes itself is here in the shrine. I must get the Mysterium Xarxes. It is my only hope of finding a way to recover the Amulet now.

After taking the Mysterium Xarxes:

I have the Mysterium Xarxes, the Mythic Dawn's book of secrets. Now I must escape this place and return to Cloud Ruler Temple.

After escaping Lake Arrius Caverns:

I have escaped with the Mysterium Xarxes. Now to deliver it to Martin at Cloud Ruler Temple.

[edit] Tips

Before heading in and getting your items taken away, drop any armor or weapons or potions you may need on the ground. Then accept everything to be taken away, run back, and grab the gear you dropped.

In the treasure room down the ramp there is a random ring drop in one of the crates. Can use the Storeroom key found on one of the bad guys to enter. Potentially possible to get Ring of Perfection, +10 to all stats. Also Base Amulet of Absorption (Spell absorption 14pts).

If you give all of your items to Harrow and then decide to kill all of the Mythic Dawn in the shrine room, your items will all be on him after you kill him.

Though this might not work on other's games, it may be possible to kill Ruma Camoran and steal her Mundane Ring which apparently can be used in the Main Storyline quest Paradise. It's not confirmed if she respawns during the quest.

Also, if you're a mage of some kind, you may get the bright idea to try to blast Mankar while he stands up there. However, he has a very high spell reflection on him, making any spells you cast likely to damage you instead.

Mankar Camoran will not talk to you, even if you are right next to him. When he escapes to his Paradise, and you are right next to him, it will say the portal needs a key!
