The Dragonfires are inside the Temple of the One in the Imperial City Temple District. When an emperor dies, the Dragonfires go out. The next heir to the throne then takes the Amulet of Kings and relights the Dragonfires. These Dragonfires are meant to keep the barrier seperating Tamriel and Oblivion shut. When Emperor Uriel Septim VII died, and there was no heir to relight the Dragonfires, the aforementioned barrier is opened, thus allowing the Daedric Invasion that was the center event in Oblivion.
