Dunmer
From the OblivioWiki – your guide to everything Oblivion
- Also known as "Dunmer" in their homeland of Morrowind, the Dark Elves are noted for their skilled and balanced integration of the sword, the bow and destruction magic. They are resistant to fire and can summon an ancestral ghost for aid.
Dark Elves are the dark-skinned Elven peoples of the Eastern Empire. "Dark" is variously understood to mean "dark-skinned," "gloomy," and "ill-favored by fate." The Dunmer and their national character embrace these various connotations with enthusiasm. In the Empire, "Dark Elves" is the common usage, but in their Morrowind homeland, and among their Aldmeri brethren, they call themselves the "Dunmer". The dark-skinned, red-eyed Dark Elves combine powerful intellect with strong and agile physiques, producing superior warriors and sorcerers. On the battlefield, Dark Elves are noted for their skilled and balanced integration of swordsmanship, marksmanship, and war wizardry. In character, they are grim, aloof, and reserved, distrusting and disdainful of other races. Once the Chimer, they were changed into Dunmer by Azura, as punishment to their gods, the Tribunal, for betraying the Daedra.

[edit] Usage
The Dark Elf is a "jack of all trades" race that has skill bonuses and attributes suitable to any specialization. Dark Elves generally begin combat with a Sneak Attack from an enchanted Bow. Once the enemy is close enough they use powerful "cast on touch" destruction spells (because "cast on touch" is very efficient and having two avenues of ranged attack is just redundant). Once their limited Magicka pool runs dry they resort to multiple swipes with an enchanted dagger in order to get extra "cast on strike" damage. Dark Elves rely on Light Armor for protection, and use Mysticism spells in order to keep enchanted weapons charged.
[edit] Drawbacks
One drawback of a Dark Elf is that it has trouble seeing in Dark Dungeons, and must rely on a torch in order to find loot. Mysticism helps detect enemy locations, but is not as useful as a Night Eye spell. Another drawback is that it takes quite a bit of effort to get all of your needed attributes to 100. Yet another one is that the game's leveling system frowns on having multiple avenues of attack. Many leveled enemies will be much more powerful than your attacking skills. This can be fixed by turning down the difficulty slider until you reach higher levels. Another is the Dunmer's low personality which can make persuasion difficult.
[edit] The Lady
In order to get relatively large amounts of health and to help Destruction many players choose the Lady as a birthsign. The Lady's Endurance boost along with Endurance as a Favorite Attribute gives a male Dark Elf a starting health of 110, and a +5-6 maximum health boost every level.
[edit] The Lord
The Dark Elf's fire resistance offsets the fire weakness of this birthsign. The restore health spell can give a Dark Elf a way to heal himself without having to add restoration as a skill. This frees up space in the major skills of your class.
[edit] Vampirism
The Dark Elf's Fire resistance helps to offset the Vampire's fire weakness. The Hunter's Sight Vampiric power gives a Dark Elf a way to see in the dark. Vampirism boosts Strength, Speed, Willpower, Sneak, Mysticism, and Destruction for a Dark Elf. Also for pure role playing purposes nothing beats running around as an ashen skinned blood sucker.
