Fort Nikel
From the OblivioWiki – your guide to everything Oblivion
Fort Nikel, located at the southwest corner of the intersection of the Red Ring Road and the Black Road (just northwest of Wawnet Inn), is a one room fort ruin.
The above ground ruins are extensive with much of the outer walls of Fort Nikel still standing. The entrance lies in the center of the collapsed central keep. A bed can be found in the central ruins as well.
Morning Glory growing along the outer walls are the only plants of note.

- Fort Nikel
It's a grand example and one of the few locations that you can witness Bandits fighting Marauders. Not much loot to be had totalling 6 chests and 7 enemies, but witnessing the two sides battle can be enjoyable.

[edit] Nath Dyer
Near the back of Fort Nikel you should find a small lake, if you should go and look at it you can see a rotten and severed body floating in the water. You'll notice that it's the remainings of Nath Dyer. If you search him you'll find Primrose Leaves and a letter. However these items will trigger a quest that can't be completed. The developers probably left this an incomplete quest.
It is possible that Nath was killed by the bandits living in Fort Nikel. It seems that the letter was meant to be sent to an unknown woman in the Imperial City, telling her to meet Nath outside of the fort.
[edit] Zerrien's Journal
"Entering Fort Nikel I had to light a torch because it was so dim. I was presented with a long narrow passage leading to a door slightly opened. Deeper in the fort noises of pain and battle were emerging. Being curious I contiuned into the desecrated fort to find out what the ruckus was. A few yards from the door I came to an intersection in the tunnel, two hastily locked gates on either side.
'Who ever was here must've done this in a panic, a child could open these locks.'
I thought to myself, taking note of serveral slashes in the stone walls. Slipping my old iron gauntlets off and taking out a lockpick my large green hands fumbled with the inferior human technology. It wasn't long before I was in and looted a chest of some meager gold. Past the other gate the same thing, about 126 gold in all. Almost not worth the time and effort. Putting back on the gauntlets I continued down the hall to the east as my compass had said I came to another intersection in the road but this time guarded by a foaming dog. With a quick swipe of the mace it laid on the floor, pink brain matter slipping out of it's skull.
Instead of following the two pathways to the sides I decided to go foward which led me to a small balcony overlooking a statue of some person with their hands in front of them. I never really cared much for religion, so this statue had no special meaning to me. Around the statue was a pit of water to the left I could make out three cloth wearing sissy bandits, two with a bow, the other wearing a daedric looking helm. To the right I saw three marauders all in iron, again two with bows and one with a daedric type cuirass. I knew they were not daedric items though, seemed too early in my adventures to find them. Both sides constantly shot arrows and magickal spells back and forth at each other until one from the bandit side fell to the ground with a dull thud. The other two, a hedge wizard and the other archer fled to the back of their side hiding behind a few pillars.
As the marauders shouted victory I knew it was time to intervene. Jumping on to the ledge above the marauders I withdrew my trusty fine iron mace. Just as one of the archers looked up I gave him a fanged grin and desended upon his head, snapping his neck with a gruesome pop. The others turned around in shock as they heard my heavy steel armor clank behind them. Much louder then their inferior iron. As soon as they turned to see my I busted both of their skulls with one powerful blow. The archer, reeling from the hit, blood gushing from his ears tried to pull his bow string back but fell into the water. There wasn't an arrow in his hand anyways. The bandits across the way looked out from the pillar and saw me, blood soaking into my steel.
I jumped onto the pedestal in the middle of the pit, and jumped onto thier side. The wizard started to cast a spell but I was already in his face grabbing his scrawny neck. In my side I felt a searing pain and recoiled to look at what hit me. A small arrow was protruding from the leather binding on the side of my armor. The archer grinned a stupid smile, a smile that would never be smiled again. Jamming the wizards head into a nearby pillar as I rushed the archer. His tiny bow tried to block a sweeping blow from my shield as I drove it deep into his jaw. Still alive and standing he groped where his chin should've been. His eyes opened wide as his hands were unabled to locate his mandible. My large hand grabbed his leather covered body, under the arm, breast to back. Looking up I saw another one of those statues so I took the little weakling and threw him into the air, into the back of the statues head. The head broke off, of the statue that is, but the Breton fell into the water, a huge gash in his abdomen revealed his vitals, floating in the water like a bag full of air.
I finished by ransacking the place, not much money was to be made, but it would get me a nice bed in the Imperial City. It was well worth it though, not often can I split open one of the inferior races just by tossing them around. His expression, his pain, it was well worth it." -- Zerrien : Level 4 Warrior
