[edit] Efficient Ways to Get Gold

Need some money in a hurry? Want to quickly buy a house? Here's some strategies:

[edit] The Arena

The arena is an excellent way of raising a bit of cash, as long as you are a decent fighter and you have the right equipment. You can also use touch spells such as shocking touch to win. Each victorious battle will yield a decent amount of gold, depending on your level as a combatant. Also, betting on arena matches can be beneficial as long as you're feeling lucky, but losing a bet will just dig yourself an even deeper hole.

[edit] Alchemy

Alchemy is an excellent way to quickly raise a decent amount of cash, especially in the early game before the valuable leveled loot comes into play. The value of a player-made potion is largely dependent on the Alchemy skill and not the effects, so they sell for approximately the same amount. Travelling between different taverns and buying the cheapest ingredients to make Restore Fatigue potions will yield a fairly large profit margin.

Once you master alchemy, you can effectively double your profits by using single ingredients, making twice as many potions with only a miniscule reduction in selling price. This strategy may not be useful if you plan on using alchemy as a major skill, or if you plan on using alchemy to raise your attribute multipliers when leveling.

The best potions in cost are all healing potions and go for 40 Septims to 100 Septims.

[edit] Looting Guilds

Guilds are an easy source of cash, with tons of free loot lying around once you join. The Mages' Guild is particularly nice, with lots of alchemy equipment and silverware. The Alchemy equipment sells at 20-30 gold at a general trader. The food in the Guild Halls can be made into potions for more gold. Selling the books is also a choice, although it may be a bit time-consuming to have to open the book and read it before being able to put it into your inventory.

This tactic is best used in the beginning, as the Guild Halls will quickly run out of things to take and there are more efficient alternatives once you begin leveling.

[edit] Join the Thieves Guild

Joining the Thieves Guild allows you to sell stolen items (items that have a red hand over it) to the guild's various fences. Anything and everything you steal without getting caught can be sold to them. Stealing all the silverware and silver plates and dishes and selling them help pay the bills quickly. A typical job will give you 1000 septims. Particularly in the Imperial City manors.

[edit] Cheating

There are a number of Glitches(however many of them resolved with patches) which lead to large sums of cash. You can also type "Player.Additem 0000000f (amount of septims you would like)" in your console. Also if you are on the PC version you can go into the oblivion creation tool and make a chest with valuable items in it.

[edit] Selling

Selling off stuff that you find is a great way of getting large amounts of gold quickly. While exploring caves, ruins, mines and forts you will find a lot of weapons, apparel and other items that you can sell if you don't need it. As an example, Daedric weapons have base values of up to 5000 septims. Also, enchanted weapons and armor can provide a sizable amount of money (Ex. Fortify Magicka Pants are worth 2002 septims).

When/if you become Grand Champion of the Arena you gain the Rainment of Valor, this sells for 1000 septims and the best defense.

An easy way to earn Septims is to go to the Imperial City Market District when you first make a character so you don't have high skills. Kill some guards, take there armor sell it it pays like 250 per guard. Do it again until you have the amount you desire then go to jail serve your time, and you're done.
