Sheogorath

From the OblivioWiki – your guide to everything Oblivion

Sheogorath, as seen in the Shivering Isles

Sheogorath is the Daedric Prince of Madness. Formerly known as Jyggalag, he was incredibly knowledgeable, and had amassed a vast army. His Daedric brethren, fearing his growing influence, cursed him to forever be mired in a cycle of sanity and insanity. Jyggalag was split between two greatly different personalities. His new personality, Sheogorath, was insane beyond doubt, eager to torture and perform senseless deeds. Sheogorath would rule the Shivering Isles until the end of every era. Upon the passing of the era, he would be restored to his former self; Jyggalag. Jyggalag and his army of Order would wage war on the realm. When defeat would seem imminent, Jyggalag would disappear, leaving Sheogorath to rebuild the very realm he had previously destroyed. This cycle would continue indefinitely, as to prevent Jyggalag from becoming a threat to the other Daedric Princes. His plane of Oblivion, the Shivering Isles, suits him well, as it reflects his personality and mood. One half, Mania, represents his cheerfully insane behavior. In contrast, Dementia the cruel insanity he is keen to exhibit. His favored Daedric weapon is the staff Wabbajack. It can transform any living being into another random living thing. In addition, it has the capability to transport others to great heights, leaving them to plunge to their death. There is a region in Morrowind named after him, Sheogorad. In Cyrodiil he has a shrine inside Darkfathom Cave, southeast of Leyawiin, and another shrine near Fort Nomore.

Eventually, he enlists the aid of an adventurer (the player) to end his plight once and for all. Unknown to the adventurer, his original intent was to be replaced. Ultimately, the adventurer defeats Jyggalag and his mighty army. Jyggalag himself personally thanks the adventurer, and admits his disdain for his other personality. The adventurer then becomes Sheogorath, thus making the player the true Sheogorath.

In the game, if Sheogorath is summoned at his shrine (see Shrine of Sheogorath), his behavior is mean-spirited, and his voice is very high-pitched. During the course of the Shivering Isles main quest, he has a deep Scottish baritone. If the shrine quest is completed during the course of the SI storyline, Sheogorath's voice will be the same as in Shivering Isles; plus, he will yell at the player for not completing the SI storyline beforehand. If it is completed after the quest Symbols of Office is begun, the player will hear the voice of Haskill.

His name and description reference H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. For instance, his name is similar to Shoggoth, a creature from it, and his description uses terms used to describe the Old Ones, such as being the Prince of Madness and being unknowable.
