[edit] Overview
Faction: Dark Brotherhood
Quest Giver: Vicente Valtieri
Reward: Gold, advance to Eliminator rank
Bonus: Cruelty's Heart
[edit] Background
This is a unique mission, in that you don't actually kill this time, but stage the death of someone. Some people want Francois Motierre dead because he couldn't pay back a loan, and they have hired an assassin, Hides-His-Heart to do the job. However, Francois has hired the Dark Brotherhood to stage a fake assassination. Usually, the Dark Brotherhood will only accept contracts involving a death, but Francois offered them his mother. Lucien takes care of this for you. Vicente will give you the Langourwine Blade, a specially poisoned blade that mimics death but does not kill (the blade is a one-time poison use). Do not kill Hides-His-Heart (so he can report to his boss that he is dead) while doing the job.
[edit] Walkthrough
Break into Francois Motierre’s house in Chorrol. Do not kill him. He'll explain the procedure. When the assassin comes, slice Motierre once with the Langourwine Blade in the presence of Hides-His-Heart, then flee Chorrol.
After a day, come back to the Chorrol Chapel Undercroft and give Motierre the antidote. He’ll wake up, and Motierre Zombies will attack because his presence desecrated the tomb. It is a fairly easy fight but Francois can't handle them all alone. Kill the zombies and escort him to the Grey Mare (down the street east of the chapel). Return to Vicente for your reward.
After you complete this quest, you gain access to Francois' house, which is larger than most of the houses in the game, and even contains a wine cellar.
[edit] Notes
- If you break into Motierre's house before joining the Dark Brotherhood, Motierre will exclaim that you're not the one that Lachance said would come (to undertake this very mission). He'll tell you that you are free to loot his home without fear of the guards.
- A very easy way to avoid Hides-His-Heart's blade but complete the mission: Once the two start talking, slash Motierre. Don't wait for their chat to finish, just do it and run for the door, and don't stop running until you leave Chorrol. Then just wait and return.
- It's not actually necessary to wait a full day. Motierre's body will be moved directly to the undercroft at midnight.
- The zombies that attack you in the undercroft will not appear until you have spoken with the revived Motierre. Once you wake him up, he will try to talk to you, so if you back away from him before he has a chance, he may follow you, in which case you can lead him right to the undercroft doors before engaging in dialog with him.
- You can pickpocket the "dead" Motierre in the undercroft for a small amount of gold. If you have already used the antidote but have not woken him up, you run the same risk of being caught as when pickpocketing any other sleeping character. If you're a risk-taker, you can use this to wake him up. Motierre will still follow you to finish the contract, and the guard who charges into the Undercroft to arrest you can fight off the zombies - an excellent diversion. Just be sure to pay off your bounty.
- You can also run from the zombies, which will cause them to follow you outside. Guards and townsfolk will attack them.
- Don't forget to go back later and loot Motierre's house. The house is essentially left open to your plundering: nothing is marked as stolen, and you can even sleep in the bed. However, most of the containers in the house will reset, so it is not safe to use this house for storage, unless you make use of the display cases or simply leave your things on the floor.
- Do not fast travel immediately after leaving the house as it is possible for Hides-His-Heart to be killed by guards. Simply exit Chorrol through one of the nearby gates.
- Motierre's "corpse", affected by the Languorwine poison, is not the same as that of the NPC in the undercroft. If you store any items on his corpse, hoping he will wake up wearing/wielding them, you will lose them forever.
- If you use the dagger on any other NPC, it will still count as assault, and killing them with it will render them permanently dead.
[edit] Bugs
- If Motierre becomes stuck after reviving in the temple, tell him to follow you, step back into the undercroft, and back out, he should now follow you. If he still will not follow, hitting him should cause him to chase after you. Lead him to the Gray Mare and then yield.
- If you leave Chorrol while Motierre is following you he may not follow you once you re-enter Chorrol.
- If you steal the key from the Orc in the chapel and don't wait 24 hours you can not open the door.
- Re-entering Chorrol before the 24 hours is up causes Motierre to be left standing in the chapel undercroft; he cannot be interacted with in any way. To avoid this, ensure you wait for a minimum of 24 hours before re-entering Chorrol. If the bug is encountered, waiting for 24 hours anywhere outside the undercroft fixes the problem.
[edit] Journal Entries
Upon receiving the quest:
- I must go to Chorrol, break into Francois Motierre's house, and then speak with him. Motierre requested we meet this way, so he is expecting me.
After talking to Motierre:
- I must wait in Francois Motierre's house for the enforcer Hides-His-Heart to arrive. After this "confrontation," I am to slice Motierre once with the specially poisoned Languorwine Blade to stage his death. I must do this before Hides-His-Heart attacks Motierre!
After slashing Motierre:
- Motierre has been slashed with the Languorwine Blade and appears to have died from the wound, as expected. I must now flee from Chorrol, and leave Hides-His-Heart alive.
After fleeing Chorrol:
- I have fled Chorrol, and Hides-His-Heart has not been killed. I must now wait a day, so Motierre can be discovered and placed in the Chorrol Chapel Undercroft. There, I must find Motierre and administer the antidote that will revive him.
After administering the antidote:
- I have administered the Languorwine antidote, and Francois Motierre has awakened from his poison-induced sleep. I should now speak with him and make sure he's well enough to travel to the Grey Mare.
When the zombies spawn:
- Motierre has been revived, but his ancestors have risen from the dead, angry at the desecration of their tomb! I must keep Motierre alive and escort him out of the Undercroft and to the Grey Mare, where he can arrange passage out of Cyrodiil.
After depositing Motierre at the Grey Mare:
- Motierre has escaped. I must now return to the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary and speak with Vicente Valtieri to receive my reward.
